Chile elected 35-year-old Gabriel Boric as its new president in Sunday’s run-off election. He is the youngest president in Chilean history and its most leftist and liberal in over 50 years. Not since the famed Salvadore Allende has Chile had another socialist leader.

Boric has branded himself a moderate socialist, distancing his rhetoric and values from the more hardline leftist leaders in Cuba and Venezuela. He built his campaign on promises to increase taxes, create greener industries, dismantle private pension funds, and push for greater equality; however, he also faces a divided congress, a slowed economy, the re-writing of a new constitution, and social unrest. Boric takes office in March 2022. He has an immense task ahead.

“The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.” (Proverbs 21:1). God holds this young president’s heart. Pray with us for Boric’s salvation. Pray for those who will advise him as he steers the country. And pray for churches and Christians throughout Chile to be strengthened and encouraged by God’s Word in the days and months ahead.
