Comoros is a small island nation between mainland Africa and the much larger island of Madagascar. Measuring only 719 square miles, it is the fourth smallest African country by land size. Yet it is still home to 869,595 lost souls, making it one of the most densely populated countries in the World. The name Comoros comes from the Arabic word meaning Moon (Arabic is one of the official languages of the country, along with French and Comorian).
Islam dominates this small country, with an estimated 99% of the population following Islam. It is the only Muslim-majority country in Southern Africa. According to legends, the island sent representatives to Mecca to hear from Mohammed in 632 but by the time they arrived, he was dead. However, after staying in Mecca for a while, they converted to Islam and brought it back with them. Regardless of what happened, Islam is very clearly a powerful force within Comoros that affects every aspect of their life. This is seen in the legal system, where Islamic justice is an integral part of the process.
Comoros consists of three large islands and several small ones. The largest, Grande Comoros (or Ngazidja) is made up of two large volcanoes. It is home to over 300,000 people and its largest city, Moroni, is also the national capital. The government is very complex and 80% of the central government’s budget is spent on just keeping the system running! Each of the three large islands have their own president and ministers. There is then a rotating president who is over everything.
Due to the heavy and early influence of Islam over the country, there have not been many attempts to reach these islands with the Gospel. With over half the country under the age of 15, the potential of both physical growth and spiritual revival is great.
